ned stand/sump advice

i picked up a new tank yesterday because i got a sweet deal, and now i want to plan everything out before setting it up.

it's very similar to a finnex m-tank, but the guy who sold it to me said it was roughly 48 gallons.

it has a fase wall and chambers in the back, but i think i want a sump for a few reasons.

1 being more protein skimmer options, i want this to be a tank that can handle sps well.

2 more water volume would be nice

3 i want a refugium.

my problem is that the stand is divided in half by a vertical support.

check out the pictures:

the stand has 24" of length available inside, but it's now divided into 2 12" sections.

is this support 100% necessary for roughly 50gallons of water.?

i'd like to take it out and put in a 20gallon high tank in there as a sump. i thought about moving that support over, but i'd have 4" of space left and i'm not sure the support would be very useful so close to the end of the stand.

thanks for everyone's help.

once this issue is solved, i may need help on basic plumbing.
