has anyone made money by selling their snails (when they mate)
I don't know if snails mate or what, but all I know is that my tank is always getting new ones. I see the old ones getting bigger, and I see new small ones, like spec size. I was wondering if someone has sold these before. Either privately on the forum, or through ebay. But I got a few PM about this.
What $1 per dozen sound good? They are about "___" <--- that big, some are smaller, some are bigger. But they do each all day, and they hold potential to provide extra snails for you, and possiblity sell them. If I did sell them, how would I ship them. Would something as simple as putting them in a watter bottle, then bubble raping the bottle with a heat pad in it work? And then put in a box with newspaper of peanuts? If I can make even a small percentage of my total tank cost, I would be happy. Paying the $10 a month for the salt would even make me happy. Who knows, this coudl be a start of my own business. ^_^ |

haha you just gave me a cool infomercial idea lol..."get rich fast by selling....snails!!!!" lol
anyways... i'd say it all depends on what kinda snails they are. If you dont know, you'll have a hard time selling, but if they're somethng like nassarius or ceriths or turbos or something, then i'd say you could do it, and at least pay for your salt! i'd say only do local selling too. easier that way, but you might have a hard time of finding a constant buyer(s). i'd say that a buck for a dozen of that size is decent...how big are the big ones? will these ones get much bigger? HTH mike

Snails at the lfs go for over a dollar each.
You might talk to your lfs and ask about credit for snails: they can do that. If they're getting a dollar, you can figure their overhead and markup; offer them at 25 cents each and the store still makes a profit. They'd be your most steady market, if you can deliver well-grown snails. Might at least pay the salt bill: no shipping, no hassle. If you're rural, you can make contact with a neighboring lfs and ship, or hand-carry.

I have some breeding ceriths and strombus as well as limpits and those little nocternal ones that I forget what they're called.
At any rate, I've sold a few off to help out a few people. Thing is - they really don't reproduce at a fast enough rate to keep doing it often. |

nassarius or ceriths - those sound familar. I will do a google images.
oh btw I started out with 5! I got 'em for free with an order. And that was last Christmas eve. (I remember, b/c they were a day late) so 5x1000 = the amount I gave i'm sure. |

Re: has anyone made money by selling their snails (when they mate)
$1 per dozen sound bad. Do you know what kind they are yet? I can tell my turbo and cerith snails apart pretty easily, there is a little difference in the shells, even when they are really small.
The snails that I have had shipped to me were sent USPS priority I think. Whatever their 2-3 day shipping is. A water bottle would be OK, a thermos would be better for controlling temperature though. I've had all my snails shipped to my "dry". They put the snails in a plastic bag with a small paper towel that is damp, but not dripping one with no other water. $10 a month is better than $0 a month, right? |

Yeah - those look like the same breeding ceriths that I have. You didn't participate in the sandtrade did you? I probably packed 5000 of those things away last year

I have columbellid (strombus grazer) snails, and when they go into breeding frenzies, I trade with other reefers or in the past, I have sold at our auctions. I think I got four or five bucks for a dozen snails.

How fast do the eggs hatch. I've had some snails lay eggs on the glass but seems they get eaten by either my fish or other snails. Unless they hatch quickly and are now in the tank somehwere.
