alternative to tunze...

i need more flow and with the new 180, maxijets are to small and i would need way to many of them to get the right amount of flow.

tunze are to expensive right now.

i hear seio's like to nuke tanks.. but are a cheap alternative. What about the vortech pumps? I hear they are pretty good...?
anyone know where i can look at the vortech specs?

thanks for the help!

If you're good with diy projects, there's a loooong thread on modding maxijets. Seios have more of rep. for just stopping, and need more maintenance than nuking tanks. If you think tunzes are expensive, vortechs will cause heart failure. Try the non-crontrollable tunzes on a simple timer. For a 180 on a budget that may be a good compromise.

If you are worried about price vortex arent any cheaper. You can can mod maxijets and get huge flow from them. Just look up the maxi stream mods.

Vortech will cost you almost as much as a Tunze setup but won't have any controllability like a Tunze will.

Seio's don't do well on controller. I've never heard of a Seio nuking a tank, the Rio does, but not the Seio.

I think someone just mentioned it, but Seios are not controllable, not even on a simple timer. Some folks have done it, but the concensus is not. Taam even specifies that it shouldn't
be used on a controller of any type.

Best and cheapest way to go is to mod a MJ900. If your not into the DIY stuff you can buy all the parts from MJmod.com which is sponser here and is from the same sight that sells Coral Chilli.

how much flow would come out of the maxijets 1200 if i modded them> Maybe i'll mod a few of them but get a seio to push the majority of water. Vortechs are expensive... lol
a single tunze on a wavebox may work as well, just need to sell some stuff... lol

thanks everyone! keep the ideas comin

I would go with a couple of SEIO's pumps. I have a few and other than if the power goes out they might start right back up or they might wait and hour then kick back on I have never had an issue. WHILE the maxijet mods are neat and cheap, they tend to be alot more trouble than they are worth. IE always tinkering with it to make it stay together and not vibrate.... As far as real controlable flow for cheap....THERE ISN"T ANY...

I currently use 4 SEIO 1500's and have had no problems with them thus far... and my system is twice yours and they move plenty of current around the tank. so for 60 bucks or so try them out !

I have had MJ's, SEIO's, and now Tunze's. Save a little money for a few weeks, and just the right flow now, rather than upgrading later. Tunzes are by far the best flow option, and worth it, IMO.

HTH,
Dave

Heck, I just gave two 1100's away. For free. I got tired of them stopping after the slightest power blip. They would only re-start after you took them out of the tank, and smacked them. I should've been smacked for buying them. Absolutley no confidence in Taam products here.

If I had followed Rutz' advice a few years ago, I would have saved a bundle. It's just like buying good quality tools: If it's something you have to depend on, don't buy cheap. Unfortunately, in this hobby just about everything priced cheap, really is.

sigh... now i dont know what to do. lol I can't really afford tunzes unless someone is selling them off whose getting out of the hobby, but even then someone picks them up extremely fast!

i may have to deal with seios until i can afford the tunzes.

anyone wanna trade fish for tunzes??

I had a seio die in my tank. I was lucky and caught it right away. It smelled bad like burnt plastic and am sure it would have nuked my tank if I had not got to it as soon as I did. I will never buy another one.

You don't have to purchase an entire Tunze system at once. Purchase a 6100/6200 now, save your pennies, then a multicontroller, then your second, third, etc as your funds allow.

I replaced 3 SEIO's and 4 maxi's w/ a couple of 6100's on a multicontroller. Once you go Tunze, you never go back....

HTH

1 have 2 maxi 900 mods. i love them. mine are quite, no vibrations, no restart problems and move water like no other. they kick seios butt all day long! mine were build by a club member that has access to a cnc machine. very high quality.

I have never heard of a Seio nuking a tank. I have two of them that have been chugging along for over two years now and have never failed to start. I have only cleaned them in vinegar about 4 times in that time period and I run a calcium reactor and keep my calcium about 450. I wouldn't hecitate to recommend them to anyone. You may want to look into the new Tunze NanoStreams that will be arriving in Septemebr though.
