What qualifies as live sand?
Unfortunately, I have no experience with live sand as of yet. How can I tell the difference from regular sand and live sand at an LFS. (I do realize that this is the noobest question I have probably ever asked.)

live sand is just sand that is taken from the ocean or someones tank(containing life)
i would not buy live sand in bags from a lfs. that should be labeled "detritus in a bag". you cant expect anything to live long in a sealed bag for a few months on a shelf. i would get dry sand, rinse it well and place it your tank. then find a few local reefers and get a cup or two from there tank and just place it on top. in no time flat it's all "live sand" |

Live sand contains benificial bacteria and is wet. The bacteria is what makes it "live".
