What qualifies as live sand?

Unfortunately, I have no experience with live sand as of yet. How can I tell the difference from regular sand and live sand at an LFS. (I do realize that this is the noobest question I have probably ever asked.)

live sand is just sand that is taken from the ocean or someones tank(containing life)

i would not buy live sand in bags from a lfs. that should be labeled "detritus in a bag". you cant expect anything to live long in a sealed bag for a few months on a shelf.

i would get dry sand, rinse it well and place it your tank. then find a few local reefers and get a cup or two from there tank and just place it on top. in no time flat it's all "live sand"

Live sand contains benificial bacteria and is wet. The bacteria is what makes it "live".
