**90 gallon stocking list**
I am going to set up a 90g hopefully in the near future and was just thinking of some stocking plan. It is going to be a FOWLR becasue I already have a reef tank.
Please feel welcome to critique it in any way. It will only better my plans 5 Green Chromis 2 Ocellaris Clowns 2 Yellow Tangs 1 Blue hippo Tang 1 Niger Trigger 1 Copper Banded Butterfly 1 Longnose Butterfly I am not sure if two butterflys are compatible so please tell me if they are or arent. Any help is greatly appreciated. MJD |

I think that is too many "large" fish for just a 90.

i agree w/ msuzuki. that's going to be a packed tank when they all grow up. even if you figure out how to not use any LR in the tank, i think it would still be pretty crowded. and I don't suggest that you skip on using LR.

the yellow tangs will fight each other and possilbe the regal (depending on the order introduced) I prolly wouldent put that many large fish in that tank. I'd prolly skip on the yellow tangs and one of the butterflys.

I know someone from nanoreef.com who has 20 fish in a 72 bowfront. They are all thriving. If this works here is a link to his thread. Of course he does have ridiculous equipment but 20 is alot and he has like 5 tangs in there.
I am willing to take out of my list a yellow tang, the niger trigger, and one of the butterflys. So which butterfly is easier to keep? My list remains at: 5 green chromis 1 blue tang 1 yellow tang 2 ocellaris clowns 1 of the two butterflys |

It's not really an issue of making it work or not. Look at an LFS, they have up to 20+ fish in litte 2' x 2' spaces and the fish are alive. But that only works temporarily. Instead of getting several tangs, try to find a medium sized one that you really like. I would love a yellow and a hippo, but am settling for a singel purple.
If you still want two yellows, consider getting a Foxface Lo and only one yellow tang. Very interesting fish and peaceful. |

The original list you have would be fine if you just got rid of one of the two yellow tangs. The niger trigger is also a large fish that may become something of a detriment to water quality, but that doesn't mean you can't have him. You would just have to keep up on water changes and have good filtration.

I agree with Turbo Snail. It seems like a big stocking list. What kinds of filtration are you going to use? What size sump? I suppose all that makes a huge difference.

Yes, I think that's too many big fish for a 90 gallon. I have a 90 with a yellow tang and a hippo tang, and I think that is pushing it. There are many who would say hippos shouldn't be in anything less than 100-150 gallons. Both of my tangs are healthy (the hippo being the biggest fish in the tank). But I think when you have alot of fish in a tank, that's when the hippos really stress out and are ich prone. In my tank I have 1 yellow tang, 1 hippo tang, 1 clown, orchid dottyback, cleaner wrasse, and goby. The hippo is a pig and poops alot, so having as many big fish as you want to have is going to create a heavy bioload, and your maintenance is going to be very time consuming. Personally, I would only have 1 maybe 2 big fish.
I must say though, I do love my hippo (had him for about 6 years now along with the yellow). |
