Mystery blob
I have a mystery mass of white and green… stuff under one of my piece of LR. I took the photo below a couple days ago. Tonight I noticed my blue Porcelain Crab, (Petrolisthes sp.) hovering over it, upside down of course. I tried to see if the crab was eating at it or protecting it, but didn’t see him exhibiting either of these behaviors. On possibility I thought of, just throwing something out there because I am clueless, I have three mature convict blennies/engineer goby fish in the tank. Perhaps some eggs? The Porcelain crab has been in the tank for well over a year now and there is nothing that could have possibly mated with it which I believe is necessary to get any eggs. Jon PS. I will try to get more pics soon if possible, it's in a hard spot to get a good angle on. |

Looks like it could be a sponge ... I recently found a similar sponge growing under one of my rocks on the bottom of the tank. I found it when rearranging rock, and since placing it in the light, it has receded and I expect it to disappear... except that it's probably still growing beneath the rock.

That looks like sponge, which is a great filter feeder.

If it's a sponge it isn't getting much food right now. The crabs sucking it all in, lol.
I was going to try to snap some pics with the crab chilling on it. I turned around just not to do so and the lights are already out, so I will get it another time unless there is major concern about it. This may have been in my tank since I've purchased it with out me knowing. I saw something similar to this about a year ago and before that I hadn't added anything to my tank in a long time. Jon |

A couple days ago I believe I witnessed something that may support another possibility. I’m 99% sure I saw two of my convicts… going at it.(trying to keep this pg) It was rough and wild and did not last terribly long. They did it once then hung out together then again a couple minutes later. When they are doing it the bottom half of there bodies have been under one of the pieces of LR so I could not see too much. May I possibly have eggs?
I guess, as brought up in another thread by Angel*Fish, I need to find out if the convicts are demersal, meaning they lay eggs that stick to rocks or something near the bottom". |

Afaik, damsels adhere their eggs on a surface just like clowns, who are closely related to damsels. you would be likely to see the mass of eggs mature and hatch within a week or two.

that looks like what I have in my tank. I think it is some sort of sponge. Mine grew between two rocks and "glued" them together. Kinda cool looking.
