Lowest salinity LR can tolerate for extended periods.

I've been storing my LR since after Katrina inside my house in tubs filled with saltwater, circulating by powerheads. I "cooked" the LR for 2 months, every week swishing and changing water, before I decided to just store it in saltwater for a while(5 months so far). Well anyway I checked my Sp. Gravity the other night and it was pretty low. Like 0.117 low. I adjusted it back up to 1.022. Question is do I still have LR or did I kill all the bacteria.

Im sure you mean 1.017 not 0.117. If it was 1.017 then you should be fine. IME 1.015 is the lowest the bacteria can handle without a rapid decline in thier population.

I would be finding out why it dropped so much.

Thanks. I think it was low due to improper measuring of my salt. I wouldn't know what else to blame.

In reply to your question, I have taken LR thro' hyposalinty before to 1.009, and you'd be surprised how much survived, including aiptasia. Bristleworms, many algaes, pods as well.

The filter bacteria are affected to a degree by most physical paramers, but are surprisingly insensitive to reduced salinity. I did my research before putting the admittedly cheap LR thro' all of this.
