Help, Please
I'll try to keep this as short as possible.
I left for work today around 3:30pm and returned around 10:30pm... when I left my tank was fine/normal... when I returned it was very cloudy... All levels were tested on the 20th and were normal. Tonight everything tests the same. All fish, corals, etc. seemed fine before the lights went out. Other than feeding on Sunday, the only thing I've done is dose Reef Calcium on Saturday, as directed. Any ideas what would cause the cloudiness during the 7 hrs I was gone? Thanks |

Spawning event (snails, corals, etc) or bacteria bloom (how old is your tank? did you dose vodka, sugar, etc?) or chemical war (what did you add new?)
Could you have lost power? Are there any deaths? Missing fish? |

The tank has been running for 4 months. I keep the Vodka for myself, LOL. Nothing new has been added in a few weeks. Power was out for less than a minute today and not a hot day. The anemone and stars seem fine... as do fish, corals, snails, crabs...

Any other thoughts? I'm worried and can't sleep until I know if there's something I should do...

What are the calcium and alkalinity readings in the tank?

This is the first time back since then so I'll answer Q's first. I added Reef "Calcium" once before but, normaly use Reef "Complete". KH was 8 ans Ca was 385 at that point... was 375 on the 22nd.
I ended up doing a 10gal wc at 4am and everything was fine Monday... didn't lose anything... just trying to figure out what happened. Thanks, Tal |

If the levels test the same I would say your fuge probably got stirred up when the power came back on after the outage. Fish could have gotten to the Vodka and stirred up the sand too... My Goby occassionally likes to move my sand bed around and make the tank cloudy.

I would say if it doesn't start to clear in a few hours test the water again.

i used Reef Calcium twice. both times my tank clouded up. some others here have had the same experiences. someone emailed SeaChem, they responded they product causes an bacteria bloom of some kind. its not a bad bacteria, but one thats in every tank anyway. something they use (i cant remember what its called now) causes this certain bacteria to go crazy, which causes the water to cloud up. it usually goes away in a day or two, and doesnt harm anything. SeaChem said if you continue the use of the product eventuly the bloom stops. i didnt want to risk it . so i started using a 2 Part to balance my alk and calc.

Paintbug... that makes sense as to why it wasn't cloudy until about 18hrs after I added the Reef Calcium. Now that you mentioned it, I seem to remember hearing something about that... it's hard to remember everything in this hobby, lol
Thanks everyone! |
