Twas the Mantis shrimp! In the live rock! With the mandibles!

…. I've heard the clicking. I've found the corpses. I've been in denial for months. But the time to rise against the unseen beast is NOW! For all hermit kind! My poor crustations have been pleading with me to rid them of their night terror.

Tonight, the inverted coke bottle trap will be set in an attempt to lure the beast from its foul den with the fru-its of the raw shrimp. This sacrificial offering will be too much for the devil to resist! Victory is inevitable. I am prepared for a vicious battle, the likes of which my tank has never seen. My determination is unwavering and though I have not met the face of my enemy, I have no fear!

Even now I can hear the cheers of my snails, crabs and shimps whos lives will not be wasted! They will carry me on high and we will dance over the prison of their tormentor!

….. Yeah, got a little carried away there. I'll post some pics if my mantis safari goes well. Peace.

haha... well atleast I got a good laugh in =]
I had the same thing happen to me, in my 29 gallon reef, and after 2 years... i never saw the little demon. When I set up my 75, as i was tranfering all the rock from the 29, I soaked the rock that was on the side of the tank with the clicking, in FW, and never found anything..., but it must have worked because, I havent lost any hermits or snails, and I havent heard any clicks...

The last thing I want to do is pull out my rock. I'm hoping this will work. Thing is, I've never even seen this thing. I know what they look like though! Makes me scared to put my hand in my tank.

I tried the trap but it wouldnt work. Luckly for me the mantis was in a little piece of LR around 3lbs so I just removed it and gave him a tank of his own. Good luck catching him.

About ten years ago when I first set up my FOWLR tank I had the same problem and the LFS gave me a pyramid looking device to catch him with the bait. It took a couple days but I caught him and when I returned the trap the LFS were more amazed than I was. But it worked. Good luck !

How did you do it? Did you use it over a period of a week or what? I'm not 100% sure what rock he is in.

What I'm planning on doing is just putting new bait in every day and throwing the trap in right before the lights go off and putting it in the same place every time... I have no idea what the hell I am doing.

if its just one click at a time, where there is a good pause, its more likely to be a pistol shrimp, but if you here more rapid click that are more like 2-4 consecutive clicks most likely its a mantis...

TKByrnes~As for your hermits, it sounds more like what you are seeing is a molt.

Pistol Shrimp are well known for clicking also, so before you rip your tank apart, consider that it may be a harmless little pistol shrimp.. :P

Obviously if you keep finding dead corpses its probably a mantis .. :S

You could have a couple of pistols in there. I was hearing consecutive pops... found out I have about 3-4 pistols in the 100 gal. from TBS. Just look at the base of the rocks for excavations... peak at the holes with a flashlight... you'll see pistols

What did the hermits look like? I started with 12 hermits and i'm down to 2 left now. All the bodies I've found have been split in half right down the middle.

Post weekend update:

Baited and set the trap half an hour before the lights went off all 3 nights.

First morning: The shrimp was gone! No idea where it went or what ate it.

Second morning: Shrimp still in the trap, it looked like it went from blue to a pink cooked color over night.

Third morning: same thing as day 2.

All I caught was about 4 naussarius (sp?) snails.

By what you guys are describing, it sounds more like a pistol than a mantis. It is usually 1 or 2 clicks followed by LONG pauses. The corpses of my crabs look like they were ripped out of their shells, just like arms floating around.
