Sump design question.
Should I use baffles or eggcrates to seperate the frag and the fuge section?

baffles. that would help take away bubbles i would think.
so you're not putting a skimmer in this?

Skimmer will be external.
Here's the layout of the original when i thought I was gonna use a 55g glass tank that was 48x13x20, but I picked up a 55 acrylic 48x15x18 (which is more ideal for a sump due to the height and width) so I'm just playing around with the ideas again but the concept and the chambers will remain the same. Just sized a little differently. Also instead of live rocks, I'll be using Eggcrates to elevate the frags above the bottom for the debris and easier maintence, live rocks rubbles will now be dropped directly int othe drain section and a few in the return section. ![]() |

I've seen both eggcrate and baffles used successfully. Baffles enforce a tiered approach and limit the size of your topoff area (as the return pump area is the only one which will vary in height). If you have an ATO this isn't as big of a problem. Eggcrate lets the water volume swing more (without ATO), but may create better flow through the frag area.
PS: What did you use to draw this?

i used sketchup to do the drawing.
I have an ATO from a 55g drum, should last me months ![]() A small MJ will be placed in the Frag area for flow. I kind of not want the macros to be flowing over to the frag section cause I'd like to keep that area as clean as possible for display purpose as well. |

Didn't notice you could do dimensions with sketchup. Going to have to play with it some more
![]() Perhaps used solid baffles up until the return pump section? You have a valid point about macro control ![]()

When you draw anything, you can simply punch in the dimension/length u want and it will auto. draw it for u. IE: make a box (any size) hold the left mouse button, punch in 4'x2' "enter" this will give u a box that's 4x2 replace the ' with " will give u inches. I sketch that up in just a few minutes. |
