dang it

so i had my params in good condition to add a fish. i added a clown, and everything was still ok. well i FINALLY received my order of live rock that i had written off as a loss because it took almost a month to get. instead of doing the smart thing and cycling it in a different tank i was so excited that i added it directly to my main tank. now the ammonia has shot up high! how often can i do a water change to help level it out? daily, semi-weekly, weekly?

I would get the clown out right away and the cycle the tank as you normally would. If you leave the clown in you may not be able to keep the ammonia at a level that will not kill the clown.

Regards,

Pat

Yep, here's where you set up your qt. Take half a qt of tank water [ammonia and all] and new water, and acclimate your clown: you need the bacteria for the floss filter, but no more of it than you absolutely have to have to get the filter started. Keep it bare bottom and watch overfeeding. If your lfs is open at this hour, beg some dirty filter medium from them and if you get that you can use all new water, which I'd do, by choice.

so i am on my way to walmart in a few mins. i need to get a 10 gallon tank, i have a filter from the tank that i can use on the qt. take half of my old water and then half of my new water and probably make a drip system for the little guy to get him acclimated to the new water? i also want to treat him for ich because i found a spot on him just now. can i use the qt to do so?

sounds like a good plan, while cycling the main tank treat the clown in the qt for 6 weeks in hypo, if you have a refractometer and qt all other fish before you add them to the main tank from now on and you won't have problems later on

hypo is safe for fish, just make sure to use a refractometer as a swing arm hydrometer isn't accurate enough. here is a good article

I concur on the refractometer: for the sake of your fish, be accurate with the salt; and don't just stir-mix: let that pump cycle the salt for a bit before you put him in---he should be fine.
