Help! tank overheated

I must have moved the dial on my heater when changing some plumbing last night. Tonite, I noticed the temp had gone up to 88. I normally keep it at 80 with max 2 variation. How fast should I try to cool things down?

Thanks,
reDive

I'd get it to 84 asap - then cool about a half degree or so an hour till get back to normal. Turn your lights off and use a fan, ice packs, power heads pointed towards the surface.

Unless you do water changes with cold water, I dont think you need to worry about the speed. Ice packs, fan... are all passive enough that you will not have an issue..

Thanks for the replies. I did a 5G water change with 80D water, killed the lights, and have an ice pack in. I live in the mountains, so if I leave the window open, the room will cool to 60 overnight. My anemones are retracted, but otherwise most things aren't looking too stressed.

I had a similar thing happent to me today as well. While doing tank maintenance I turned of my chiller and forgot to turn it back on....DOH! My tank went up to 84 before I noticed the temp, so I turned the chiller back on and it seems there was no damage. Good luck with yours!

My tank stays around 80 during the day. At night, the fans go off with the lights and I noticed it hit 82.9 last night. I placed a fan on the floor in front of the sump and the temp dropped 1-degree in about 5-mins. I moved it back three feet when it hit 80 again. A fan blowing directly at it will work wonders.

Thanks for the advice. My tank is back at 80 with no visible carnage.
