inlet into sump/mechanical filter?

i have 2" inlet to sump filtered by 4" sock. water flow is about 900 to 1000 gph. water overflows sock all the time causing salt splash. thinking of doing away with sock filter. have heard of tanks without mechanical filter. if possible to do without sock, any ideas how to make 2" inlet work without to much splash and noise. thought about extending pipe into water?
