Couple of quick question on new 40G Breeder
I've got a 40G breeder and a 20G long sump that I'm about to get serious with. I'm going to be drilling the tank for a Calfo style overflow. The RC calc for 200GPH says 3 inches of linear overflow. Seems rather small... I'd like to skim with a larger overflow, can it be too big?
Also, in the sump, how do you determine the max height of the baffles? T

I'm glad to see more people are doing 40 breeder. I just love how they look. I'm sorry that I can't help you with your question, because I don't have a sump, but I'm sure someone on Reefcentral will help you out. Good luck.

haha, i'm also glad to see more people going w/the 40 breeder
I've got just a regular 20g sump on mine. I dont know what the linear height thing is...but for the baffles...you want to make them so that you've got enough allowence for backflow if everything is shut off. So depending on how many gallons of water is above your return should tell you how much to leave room for i think..but then i dont know what you would do if you got the return drilled and in the bottom....

The linear part is not about depth, rather it's about how long the overflow is side to side. Is there any rule of thumb that the sump should hold 60% of it's volume and have the other 40% of volume as back flow safety or 70-30, 50-50? I will be drilling the back of the tank somewhat high up. A calfo style is a small box at the water's surface that does not take up any tank floor real estate

So your overflow is almost like a hang on style then, as far as where its placed...i've got a hob overflow on mine, but i dont reallly know much about it...i just set it up and let it run lol. But i dont know what the general rule of thumb is for the sump...but i would feel safe with about 60%

It's a box hung inside the tank with the drain bulkhead inside the box via drilled hole. It does not go all the way to the bottom. Calfo Overflow Thread
