The procedure for moving a tank is pretty much the same, whether you're moving it across the room or to another state. Get some buckets. Lots of buckets.

Since you're moving across the room, you can probably save some effort by not disturbing your substrate, but just about everything else will need to come out in order to reduce the weight enough so that it can be moved... water, rocks, livestock. Hopefully you'll have someone else who can help you move it ... it'll probably be a 2-person lift with substrate and a little bit of water left in the bottom.

When I moved my tank (about half an hour away), I also made sure I had some heaters in the water buckets so that I would avoid major temperature fluctuations. This is extremely important, especially once you start filling the tank back up because you don't want to just dump your fish and corals into a tank that might be 2 or 3 degrees different than their own respective buckets!

Another tip ... have a few gallons of new water ready to go. You'll need it... water has a habit of disappearing during moves

I recently moved a 72. Get a 45 gallon container at Target ($12) it should have wheels. I put mine on a dolly and wheeled it to another room while I replaced the floor. I put the fish and corals in there with some live rock and ran a powerhead in it. Next I put the live rock and inverts in a smaller container and ran a small filter in it. No heater was necessary as it was the summer.

AS far as substrate, I used the opportunity to change from crushed coral to sand, so I just ditched it.

I lost my hippo in the process but everything else came out ok after 4 days in the tubs.

A couple things that are great accesories for moving tanks. A sump pump that hooks to a garden hose and furniture dollies.

I can't stress the buckets enough. As others mentioned get a lot of buckets. Keep all LR submerged if possible and keep your inhabitants in separate containers as much as possible. I just moved a 90G and made the mistake of putting a foxface in the same container as a carpet (whoops). Needless to say the foxface became lunch.
