Internal Overflow box...

I am possibly getting an acrylic aquarium. It is not drilled anywhere and was just wondering, are they necessary? I have seen others drilling in the back near the top and installing elbows at the surface but don't know how reliable that is or how much flow they can actually handle.

Anyone with any first hand experience or any good links...please assist.

Thanks,
Mike

i think overflow boxes really just help keep things form getting clogged in the pipe, skim the surface, hide the plumbing, and thats all i can think of

at school there is an acrylic 40 reef, drilled on the bottom, the drain is a 1" pipe coming up with a 3"-1" reducer on it, loud as heck, but works fine, no overflow teeth or anything
