Return Pump Help
Hey all, I'm using a Mag Drive 12 as a return pump for my 75g tank from my 30g sump. Is there another submersable pump out there that has the same flow rate as the Mag12 but takes up less electricity or puts out less heat?

I dont own one but I hear a lot of good things about ehiem pumps being more efficient and quieter than the mags (I have a mag 7 on a closed loop and it sounds more like an electric generator than a pump sometimes).

Thats a lot of flow for a 75G if you have it plumbed correctly (1.5"). If you have small plumbing (3/4" or 1"), the flow is cut way back. An Eheim 1262 would likely have as much or more flow than that Mag 12 without the use of large plumbing. I wouldn't use that big a pump, that much flow through a 75/30G setup. An Ehiem 1260 would be a lot bet.

I was acutally contemplating using a Mag18, using 3/4inch tubing and having 2 exits, or if not, the Mag12 using 3/4inch tubing and having 1 exit. I am using 2 CPR CS100 overflow boxes which claim to flow 800gph each. What pump do you think I should use with these 2 overflow boxes and what diameter piping should I be using?

You dont need any more than 1.5-2x the tank volume per hour going through the overflow. Just enough to skim the surface, and feed this to the skimmer/fuge, anything more is waste. There are many benefits to a low flow sump... http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/sh...hreadid=550482
An eheim 1250 would be enough, then use lower wattage powerheads or a flow pump on a closed loop for most of your flow. |

I agree with Hahn. There's really no need for such turn over rate through the sump. Infact your skimmer will probably work much more efficiently with less.
