Mechanical filtration of some kind will help. If you run a sump, place a filter sock under the return line. Note of caution: if not cleaned regularly, any mechanical filtration can be a source of additional nitrates. However, nothing a little routine maintenance won't fix

It also settles down quite a bit as you go. I usually buy quilt batting and put it in my overflow when I do a water change and that polishes it up a bit.

FWIW, I've also found that the type of lighting makes a difference to what you actually see in the water column as far as particles, etc.
MH lighting makes it easier to see the small little particles in the water column versus flourescent bulbs, IME. I ran a filter sock in my 90g with MH lighting, but still saw little particles in the water. I have since removed the filter sock as I really didn't see any benefit, but did have to clean it regularly. In my 45g with VHO lighting, the water looks perfectly clear |

Here is a easy DIY filter you can run from time to time or all the time. http://www.cichlid-forum.com/article...ead_filter.php
