Lighting switch

I will be switching my tank lights in the next few days. Currently I'm running 4X65W PC (with REALLY old bulbs). The actinics come on at 8 and go off at 10. The daylights come on at 9 and go off at 9.

I'm switching to 2 250W MH and 2 VHOs. I'm trying to decide what the "best" way of switching would be.

I know some people use layers of screen and remove one a day and others start the MH out at about only 1 hour and then increase the photoperiod. Is there a general consensus on which works better?

Also I'd love to hear some suggestions for a final lighting schedule.

Thanks for the help!
