if you provide some pod piles and feed a bit of phyto, you should get away with this as you have no other pod eaters in the tank

I have a mandarin too and have a huge problem feeding him. I am trying to aquaculture tigger pods which I purchased($60.00 per bottle). Until that works out, I have had to resort to giving him intensive feeding by placing him in an intake breeder where I have been dumping alot of Brine shrimp. He has been wolfing them down and is really get alot fatter. In my opinion , I should have never bought him but he was looking so frail I just had to try to save him. Unless and until u have a huge established growth of pods in a reef tank, the intensive, isolated feeding method I described above is the only way to go. Mine is thriving and I am afraid to release him back into the tank as he was not easily caught.

I have one that I just dropped in the tank and he is fat. He is a big mandarin as well, I have never seen him eat anything besides a little flake(once).
But there must be something in there becasue he is fat!!! This is my second one, and I am telling you this guy is all over my tank, he swims in the open and through the rock, happy little fish!!! Good pick up!!!! Everybody loves mandarins, I hope you enjoy yours!!! |

I have had my mandarin in my aquarium since the end of July it eats frozen mysis and brine shrimp and anything else it can find. The other day it pulled a little white brittle sea star out of the sand! I wish I could have gotten a picture of it because it very nicely spit the leg back out but looked funny with a seastar hanging out of its mouth! I want to try the Formula 1 & 2 combination to see if it will eat some of that too.

not sure, but isn't brine not really a nutritious food source for fish? mysis, etc. is better, right? I mention it just because I'd be a little worried in the long run if any fish was only eating brine shrimp. FYI, you can buy pods online from various vendors to feed your mandarins as an insurance policy against starvation. they seem expensive, but work perfectly. mandarins really do prefer live pods for food. that's great that you have them eating prepared foods though. good luck!
