Frogspawn Eating Peppermint
Has anyone had any experience with peppermint shrimp munching on Frogspawn. I just brought one back from the store today (frogspawn) and tonight witnessed the Peppermint shrimp (not a camelback) madly picking away at the coral. Little pieces were flying off it. When I looked in to getting shrimp everything I read said peppermint shrimp were reef safe. Any ideas? Should I have read more?

Maybe it's starving and trying to survive. They will scavenge and sometimes eat aiptasia but if your tank is devoid of food sources it will desperately look for alternatives...even if these alternatives are already halfway digested in the gut of a sessile invert or anemone. Try feeding the shrimp.

If you check out the LPS forum and do a search, you will find that peps are far from lps safe. It is hit or miss and most leave euphyllias like the frogspawn alone. Acans can be shredded by them though and I have seen my cleaner shrimp steal from a candycane during feeding.
You can also feed the peppermint prior to feeding your other corals so that it is occupied for a time. Good luck and I hope the 'spawn recovers. |
