there's not a lot of difference between the 2. you pump water in, moves up through the chamber and is forced out. Biggest things to compare is which pump you use and which media, otherwise they're pretty darn close to equal.

Thanks Jason, What pump and media would you recommend? I was thinking about a Micro-Jet 450 & some PhosBan.

that pump would be pretty close to perfect. as far as media, the consensus seems to be for rowaphos being one of the better

Jason,
Do you have a link where they discuss phosbad versus rowa phos? I have been to find some good info on what might be better

Thanks so much. I have read the 1st article, but that is the first time that I had ran across the second article. Good stuff for sure.
An additional question (that makes me feel like a newbie! Argh!): What is the difference(s) between the above articles related to the decline in phosphates and what people refer to as 'active carbon?' Do they have to run simultaneously, or are they a different name for the same purpose?

What I got from the articles is that the more surface area of the GFO the better.Carbon removes toxins and polishes the water.I run Phosban in a reactor(TLF,because it was cheaper) and run carbon in a bag in my sump. You don't have to run carbon.I do because I have SPS and like the water to be as clean as possible.HTH
