Return Pump Recommendation Eheim?

Hello Everyone.

I have two mag-drive pumps in my filter, one mag 5 for the sump. and one 9.5 for the return line back to the tank. The temp is tank is hovering around 80-82 and I'm looking to bring that down.

I've been reading that alot of people have the same temp issues with this brand pump.

I'm running a fowlr at this point, and have really low wattage lighting system, so the temp is definately the result of the pumps.

Beyond the temp issue, it definately runs pretty loud, and my neighbors that live the apt below are really enjoying the vibrating noise.

I've read that alot of people are really happy with the eheim pumps, 1260 & 1262.

I have a 93 gallon bow, which would you recommend. The return line is only about 2 feet long to bulkhead 3/3" , then another 2 to surface.

Pump

Any particular reason, I see that you currently own the 1262.

yeh, i'm using a 1262 for my return adn for my skimmer. I run mine through a chiller as well. If you don't have an inline chiller, i'd recommend the 1260 because you dont' want that much turnover through your sump.

1260, or a 1262 with a ball valve to dial it back. Despite the ratings, the 1262 will have a lot more flow than a 9.5 unless you throttle it back.

Go with an external if you can.

A Mag 9.5 to a 1260 is only a 20w or so change. THats not going to make much of a difference.

Just switching from a Mag7 to Eheim1260, I got more flow, quieter, and 1 degree less heat on a 75g.

Eheim 1260 over 1262 for a 93 Gallon

Hello Again Everyone, thank you all for the recommendations. The overwhelming majority seem to think that the Eheim 1260 is the best option for my tank.

Pricing for the two models, 1260 & 1262 there is only a difference of $10.00, but a big difference in performance 600 vs 800 gph. It was my understanding that you should be aiming for a 10X turnover on the water capacity, not the case. Will the 1262 be too powerful for my setup?

When hobbyist return to turnover rate, there's 2 different rates you need to consider. For a return pump (this was what you were asking), the best turnover rate to return water from the sump to the tank is around 3x-4x the display tank volume, so you are looking for around 300-400gph. The Eheim 1260 would give you a little bit more than that, even with the head pressure on your plumbing.

To get over 9x-10x turnover within your tank, you shouls setup a closed loop system or use powerheads. Hope this helps.

I have to agree with Rich.. Only losing 20 watts of power your temp decrease will likely be minimal. you will be getting a much quieter pump though. You stated you were concerned about temp issues . Have you tried a fan in the sump/canopy
