Anyone Make a Refugium Out of an AquaClear 70 HOB Filter?
I'm thinking of doing this with mine as I would rather use money towards upgrading my lighting (to a Current Sunpod 150w HQI) instead of buying an AquaFuge PS. In a perfect world I could do both but we all know there's no such thing...lol. So, is it possible to turn an AC70 into a mini refugium by adding some refugium mud (or other substrate), some rubble live rock and some macro algae and a little clip on light? Any info/opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Do a search for AC 110. There have been many doing it with these filters.

I'm not "premium member" so I can't use the search function, can anyone search for me and post a link? Thanks!

To search, go to the main page, then on the left side click on "Search Tools", and you should be able to search RC.
I've converted my Whisper 40 into a HOB fuge, which is smaller than the AC 70. But I tell ya... I had been pestered by some red slime algae that didn't take over, but it never went away either. Now that I have my mini fuge, it's gone! I put a little 5W Coralife clamp-on light onto it, threw in some chaetomorpha, and run it on a reverse-photoperiod. It works great! I say go for it. You'll be glad you did. But I'd avoid the mud, as too much flow through it could make a mess of the tank. I just use chaeto to suck out nutrients. You could put some LR rubble in if you want, but there's so much flow through there and it's such a small filter that it may or may not help much. Good luck! |

Is it all right to use the side of the media basket as a baffle if you are doing a fuge and carbon
