I dont care for hermits. I keep a few in my tank but mostly snails. I have now bought over 300 snails in the last year. There are guidelines out there but just get a few. Add some, if they don't keep up, add more.

I only have a 12 gallon and just got my clean up crew about 2 weeks back. I was told by some to mix and match, and others said to stay away from hermits.
I was definitely getting hermits because I love to watch them move around. I do notice that they are constantly either trying to beat eachother up, or are taking a ride on a snail and trying to poke and pull them out of their shells. So yes, hermits seem aggressive and territorial. The Scarlet Hermit (red legged) seems much friendlier than the blue legged. I have no clue how much or how many, but hope that helps with deciding on hermits or not. I definitely like hermits, at least for now.

I have read the opposite regarding the red leg hermits--a recommendation of 1 red leg per 20 gallons, or something like that. If you have more than that, you will definitely start to see the aggressive and territorial behavior. Supposedly the blue leg hermits are less aggressive, and don't get as large. I have 10 blue legs and 1 red leg in my 90 gallon tank, but I haven't added corals or snails yet. I plan to add anoter 2 red hermits and 5-10 blue legs.
