Exclamation No Seafood in our lifetimes?! READ

The news that there may be no coral reefs in the next 20 years is horrible enough, today this news report has come out that claims SEAFOOD will be a thing of the past in the next 50 years! No fish sticks, clam bakes, red lobsters! I'm so sad i dont know what i will do if i have to eat chicken, pork and beef when i retire!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/6108414.stm

Very disturbing news!

Ryan

man this report is so overdue............ 90% of the worlds predatory fish are gone, but good news for me cos were about to get back into the seafood industry, aquaculture only....

one thing to consider tho, is the world is going to have to pay more for seafood.... its just that much more expensive to grow the stuff then go rape the seas for it.....

yeah well this includes shrimp, we are talking about a total collapse of the ocean's sustainable harvest at the rate we are going!

I can assure you that 50 years from now we will still be eating fish sticks (made from pollock in the Bering Sea) barring some natural disaster like global warming (non fishing related).

You can take my word on it, im one of the fishery managers in one of the worlds largest fisheries....the Bering Sea (thats where fish sticks come from)

Management measure currently in place and looming on the horizon protect overfishing of fish in the Bering Sea.

I cant believe it!!!! Another Doom's Day Profecy. When will this end??? Scientists still know very little about oceans by their own admissions. Almost daily they discover new species. Now, a couple of so called scientists-profets are making totally obsurd claim that oceans will be dead in 50 years. There were similar predictions in 1980's that oceans will die in 10 years. Yet, we're still discovering new life.
I am not dismissing the fact that excessive harvesting harms eco system, but come on! No more fish in 50 years? It is sad that science became a tool for political statemenst and policies.

just my opinion

I read this article with a huge grain of salt knowing that we, as a species, know more about outer space than our own friggin oceans.

These are probably the same crackpot cry-for-attention scientists that think humans are causing global warming.

There is a big difference between what the scientists actually say and suggest in their peer reviewed journals, and what the mass media distills out of them. If you want to know the scientist's position, I would read the journals. Not the synopsis BBC or CNN provides.

Interestingly, fish sticks used to be made from cod. And we know what happened to that fishery.. and we thought we knew how to manage it as well.

The thing looks hooky to me. Drumed up for shock value.

But it does make one think.....
Perhaps we need to be shocked.

No one is talking about environmental issues in this election.

But I dont have any kids, nor plan to, so I don't care.

Shock value?

Hmm, Codfish are commercially extinct, yellowtail flounder (almost 20 years ago and still hasn't recovered), clams in some areas, oysters in the cheasapeke, bay scallops around Long Island, no more truly giant tuna, swordfish are smaller, striped bass almost collapsed and is the only fisheries success story I know of on the east coast, but you still don't have people catching 80 lb plus strippers anymore. This is all in my life time that I've seen these fisheries drastically decline.

They should come up with an alternative... like cat sticks or dog sticks. Cats and dogs aren't extinct yet

It's true that the media is going to highlight the most alarming, or sensationalist articles. Makes the most interesting reading. Unfortunatel,y this give a distorted view of what scientists are saying. I remember reading stories about how sea levels are going to rise by 50 feet, flooding all coastal cities-- by 2020. Of course, that is ridiculous, and causes a lot of people to discount global warming completely. I guess these people think if some scientists are so wrong, all the rest must be, regardless of whatever the scientific consensus seems to be.

I don't think you can say that seafood will be gone in 50 years. I think you CAN say that fish stocks are continuing to decline, and will continue to do so dramatically unless we do something to change the way we use our ocean resources. That should be alarmist enough for us to want to do something about it, without having to make these kinds of predictions.

I agree.... But its NOT.
And just think.... what if.. they are right.

I think that people latch on to what they want to belive. I see it all the time right here on reef central. For example imagine a post that goes something like this: That Tyree electric nana ____ ___ ____ acro turned brown on you? For a more healthy coral, you should get 400 watt MH's, stop feeding it, and start adding ------- (insert whatever trase element of the month is). People point out (and rightly so) that the planet has changed and adapted in the past, and that it will (and is) as we speak, and then just dissmiss it. It is just to much work to think about time frames. No seafood in 50 years.... bah.... sounds like Al Gore, nevermind about why the scientists say such things. What I want to know is how long ago was it when things were like they are today? Take c02 levels for example (nevermind the future predictions). How many years has it been since c02 levels were at the levels they are today? What does this mean?

That article is complete BS. I've been fishing the north pacific for 30 years and the fishing has never been better. Its just total inflammatory nonsense designed to sell papers and research grants.

I wonder what a journalist would have to say about this?

Probably something to the effect of "When in Rome...."

I understand that it is next to impossible to put out stories that aren't sensationalized in some way. I hate the system - not the cogs.

u would say that woudlnt you, i mean i hardly expect you too say sorry yeh ive been rapeing the seas for 30 years... BTW - my great grand father started our business trawling so i too have blood on my hands, its just now we dont have anything to do with wild caught and are looking to new ventures to try and get aquaculture to actually take off so you can go to the fish shop and get a variety of farmed fish. ( i know about the fish meal thing too so dont flame me for that..... its another area that can be improved upon, and its good motivation to not only be successful but be able to make a difference too.)

theres too much to go on and on about on this issue, we all know the seas are in a bad way we just need some environmentaly friendly options so we can stop commercial fishing alltogether. And now is the time.
