Sump thing would be the best route, id steer clear of the canister if it were my tank!

i use hang on refugium with macro algae and tons of copepods and amphimpods everyhwere, and i use cannister full of seachem matrix good biological filter. For a skimmer i got and would recommend aqua c remora hang on skimmer.

How big is the tank?
A sump is not necessary, but they can be useful.

Typically sumps are used to house (hide) skimmers, reactors, etc... and a few other reef related devices, but are'nt necessary. Do you currently have a tank, or are you getting ready to start one?
