Sump size
What size sump should i use for a 55 gallon. I want to have a refugium in the sump too. Also how many gph should the overflow box be?

I'm planning on using an old 55 for the sump on my new 55 MegaFlow tank... I figure by the time I section off about 20 gallons for a Refugium and leave some room for extra water I'll have about another 20 gallons of sump space... if you want something easier to deal with try a 20 long though...
your Overflow basically just needs to handle about the Same GPH as your pump is rated (0' Head) for... that way by the time you factor in the head loss of the pump pushing the water from the sump to the tank you'll have some cushion... so as not to swamp it... My MF will do 600GPH so I'll be using a 700GPH Mag7 (I'll be using a tall stand so more head loss) |

Idealy your sump is for hiding heater and skimmer. Flow in tank is much differant, and all dependant on what you keep.
Flow into sump aka Skimmer is what ever skimmer does! thus baffles- its all experimental - your sump vs overflow will vary and if baffling- the return pump needs to be the most concerned it will run dryer than rest, thus perfect place for auto top off "aka" kalk Last edited by Phillstone; 11/08/2006 at 01:59 AM. |
