What do you have in your refuge?
Hi,
I just wanted to start a thread so us newbies can see what type of things generally go into a refuge.... So...what do you keep in your refuge? |

Have sand, rubble, some cheato and other plants and lots of pods. One tank has a banned emerald crab in its fuge. Used to keep asst snails in there until one climbed the baffle and got lodged in my skimmer pump I have since blocked off access with plastic screening and no problems since. There may still be a few hermits also although I have not seen them in awhile

Hermits and snails help to prevent algae in the fuge. Chaeto is a type of algae that is grown in the fuge for nutrient export. It absorbs some of the nutrients and then some of it is removed from the fuge and disposed of. It also gives a place for all of the pods, worms, and anything else that you have living in there to live and feed. Hope this helps.

Usually they will come with LR and are very tiny and very hard to see! They need time and sometimes a little bit of.. phytoplankton? to munch on.
You can boost your pod population by buying them in a bottle.. but i don't have a link handy but im sure some other helpful folks here do - only just setting up my 55 so i'll probably end up doing that at some point too ;p

timrandlerv10,
You can get it from some live rock rubble, live sand from established system, cheato from a established refuge, or the like. See if any locals are willing to donate any of these to you. If you were close I could give you a nice ball of cheato with pods, dusters and the like in it..I had a few to start and at night now it looks like there is a party going on in there. Same way in my other tanks
