Return pump question

Ok, I'm starting to look into changing to a sump/fuge setup instead of my canister. What is the good rule of thumb for water turnover? I have a 55g, and I want to make sure I get a big enough pump the first time.
Thanks!

So not calculating in head loss, all I'd theoretically need is a pump rated to 275 gph? Do most people use turnover rates higher than what they need? Would I gain anything be turning it over faster, say 10-12x?

You would gain microbubbles. Most people use lower turnover rates. The main source of flow should come from powerheads and/or a closed loop

3-5x between the display and sump. More in the display via other means.

I run about 8x display to sump and if I go up any more I have bubble problems I think a Mag 3 or 5 would be a good pump to start with (Mags lose flow very fast under pressure). Attach a ball valve to the output of the pump to control flow. Personally I use a PanWorld 50PX at about 400gph after all the plumbing (chiller, spray bar) losses.
