Clown Tang, ...and Tang police question...

Two questions,

-What is the bottom line on the clown tang? Does it need a super large tank or just premier water quality. Also what is the adult size in captivity?

-What is the the deal with "tang police" is it like the sierra club for fish? Or that the body shape of certain fish suggests long, high speed swimming?

Thanks,
Daniel

All tangs need large systems. They are open swimmers and do best in tanks around 6 feet in length. If you have a juvi you can get away with it being in a smaller tank(55g-75g) for a year or so but in the long run they need a rather large system along with good water quality.

The tang police was made up to correct people who have tangs in small tanks. Say you have a Yellow Tang in a 30g, the tang police will be all over you for it.

I have a 3" scopas in my 43 and he is happy as can be.

Anyway is the clown tang a no-no or just one of those fish that requires more attention?

And I am not trying to be a d*ck about the tang police, it just really reminded me of the sierra club

Well I hope you're not planning to put it in the 43 with the scopas. That's too small for the scopas alone.

Thats why I would like to know how big they get, and how fast they get there.

I am going to build a 1200 gallon+ system in about 18 months(FOWLER) and I would like to have a healthy specimen to introduce.

that would be a good size tank.. they get very territorial and like to dominate a tank. There very hardy fish just in small spaces don't get along well with others.. In a very large tank they can be a decent community fish.

you people sicken me.

If your going to build a big then wait until it is up, your 43g tank is way to small for a clown tang or any other type of tang.

My advice is... Please be responsible. Stock your 43 with fish that will mature and be happy in a 43 for life. Also, Tangs tend to fight with each other. I have 3 in my 140... They have an occasional "Dispute". So far so no real damage But I sometimes wish I had only 2.

You might want to wait until you actually begin your large tank build. Then buy him and place him in a QT tank while you finish out your build. A large tank build can take 3-6 months or more.

Often times our best laid plans get interrupted by life!!

Don't do it !!! I just wiped out my tank because I got stupid thinking I could keep a Hippo in a small tank while I was waiting for my 150gl to be ready. I knew better but I got greedy and now my dead fish are paying for it.

Thats a 150g they should hane plenty of space to swim.As far as dispuites the fish will quickly learn the golden rule-the fish thats bigger ,faster eats better.
