Carpet surfing

I had to transfer my two curious wormfish to another tank when my qtank developed a crack. As I was transporting them in a large cup and was pouring the cup into the other tank one of the fish jumped out of the cup and landed on my carpet. He was so small that I couldnt pick him up so I kinda pushed/flicked him real gently back into the cup and then into the tank. He was swimming strange and then 3 hours later died. I am so sad. Now only one is left.

I feel so horrible. Do you think it was the riggers of shipping and acclimation that done him in or is it the carpet surfing session? I did acclimate him for about 2 hours with the drip method (drip for an hour, empty half, drip again for an hour, then I poured in two cups of tank water and then made the move a few minutes later. I used a cup because I did not want to lift him out of the water, but the little dude jumped!

Poor guy, was only like 1.5 inches long and so delicate looking.

Hmmm....

I do not know that fish but I have had others jump and if I got them back in water fast they were ok.

is that fish very delicate ?
how long was it on the carpet?
could any kind of stuff got in him ? like dirt, possibly a chem from the floor / carpet - like say carpet dye, amonia, floor wax etc...

one or more of them could have given him a toxic bath when he landed.

or he was sick and the shock + other factors was too much.

he was only on the carpet for about 2 seconds. i think you guys are right about the cumulative effect of the stress factors (impact from landing, being outside of water, acclimation, being shipped overnight, plus being really young.

now I only have one left :-( Im going to order 3 more and try to get larger specimens because it seems like there is a higher morality rate with really young fish.

btw, the person who never heard of them...it is a type of dartfish, scientific name is Gunnelichthys curiosus, or more commonly called curious wormfish. They are fairly common in the wild but difficult to catch, always hiding in the substrate, therefore they are not availble very often in the aquarium industry (my lfs sells them for about $80-$100 and they only have had one specimen since I have been going to them).

I love them though. They have such cute personalities, always cocking their head looking for microfuana, and their swimming style is very cool to look at.
