protein skimmers

hello,I am in the planning stage of setting up a 135 gal reef tank with fish. and also a 20 gal specialty tank. also with a 70 gal fuge, and a 25 gal sump. I was trying to find an out of sump skimmer, but have come to the conclusion that for a 250 gal settup the in sump might be better? im looking at the PCI [octopus] RPS-3000 or the RPS-3000 by pacific coast? they look different, but seem to have the same specs? {same maker]? I think I am leaning toward the ASM G-5, any suggestions please. thank you.

Go with Octopuss, for the price, it cant be beat.

For your tank, get a skimmer rated for 400gallons up. Or dont use one at all, as there are nice skimmerless tanks out there. Use chaetomorphae algae for nutrient export.

I use the ETSS skimmer by AE tech. You can also plum these on the outside of the filter (or put it inside the sump.) I am so pleased with this skimmer.

thank you all for the valued information. Christa how do you like your 120 corner pentegon? as I am building and setting up a 130 corner pentegon, could you tell me how your overflows are set up? location, size, pros and cons to this setup? lighting you use,etc. again thank you all.

I had an ASM and sold it for my new octupus! The ASM seems very cheap compared to my Octopus and Euro-reef. I would vote out the ASM! My opinion!!!!

thanks cashman, is the pacific coast rps-3000---the same as ---PCI {octopus RPS-3000} same exact measurements,but is their any functionality differences? with a 130 and a 20 gal display tanks and 70 gal fuge--25gal sump, what pump would be best to use to run it. also if anyone knows,what would the output in gph be? thank you all for the great information. { my fuge as estimated will be 955 gph] 15x turnover per hour,,,,with a closed loop also.thanks again.

There are a lot of good skimmers out that do a good job. I like the ASM, because they are easy to use and do a great job. I have used a G-3 on a 180 with a 75 gal sump with total satisfaction.

Look at the ATI Bubble Master. Very similar to the Bubble King.


Plenty of folks are happy with ASM. Others say they are cheaply made. I haven't owned one and for some reason I can't give you the link to reefgeek.com for you. I highly recommend them for equipment. Also premiumaquatics.com. I also would recommend H & S's and Deltecs.



Now I own a bubble king, but I own a very large system. Euroreefs are nice as well. Anything with a needle wheel you can't go wrong with. Beware of cheap crap... you end up paying more for it in the long run.

I really love my corner pentagon. It has cherry wood for stand and cover. The down side of it is it's hard to clean way down at the bottom of the acrylic and it is hard to rearrange rock when needed because it is so deep. I stand on a ladder, but my arms just aren't quite long enough, so I wait to do this when I do a water change. I use the Icecap VHO lights that are drilled into the hood. I have 4-24" bulbs. My overflow is in the back corner of the tank and goes down to a home made refugium/ skimmer at the bottom. Since this is a large drop and was very noisy we built a durso standpipe down the back of the overflow. It really makes it alot more quiet. Eventually I am going to build a rock wall to simulate part a reef and have some deep water corals toward the bottom. Thanks for asking and good luck!

I own an ASM G3 ( gate valve and recirc modded) it does a pretty good job on my 125. If I were buying a new skimmer buying a skimmer It would be a RO NW 200 or a bubble master.
