What RO/DI and where from
I have a 28 gallon tank and wanted to purchase a unit to make my own water as the LFS only sells DI water. The water here in norman is not too good, in fact it is some of the worst. I was just wondering how much the brand of the system matters are some better than others? Also how good is the bulk reef supply brand?

BRS is probably the best for your cash. 150 to 175 about (matters on flow rate)

Any of the RC sponsors will work out well.
Make sure to avoid any units that have a horizontal DI chamber -- will cause channeling. I am a fan of the DOW FilmTec 75 GPD RO membrane -- has a great rejection rate (( 96-98% )). Also, I am a fan of having a pressure gauge on the unit, helps in letting me know when the pre-filter needs to be changed. With all of that said, I picked up my current unit from Buckeye Field Suppy about 3 years ago, and have be very pleased with it. As a matter of fact I am making some water right now, and it will fill up a 5 gallon container in an hour and half (( water pressure will be a factor with that )).

I'm trying to decide between the bulk reef supply 4 stage and 5 stage RO/DI (75gpd) and the marine depot spectrapure filter. I'm not too familiar with how these units work so im not sure how to tell if the DI unit is horizontal.

The horizontal DI usually clips onto the RO and the water flows side to side. You want the kind that looks like the previouse housings.
Any of the sponsors are great.... My gave are BRS and thefilterguys. Buckeye is also a great place and be is very helpful

It will be the last chamber (( sometimes a completely separate chamber, which I don't care for -- makes portability an issue )).
In this picture it is the last one on the right. ![]()

Ok that makes sense, the BRS RO/DI has a seperate chamber but I wont need to use it a whole lot so portability is not a real issue. The BRS RO/DI has an extra filter chamber which I would guess is a plus. People seem to like this brand so I am definately leaning its direction. Thanks for all the help so far!

I must say how pleased I have been with SpectraPure. Bought the Max Cap 90 (on sale in August for $269) and once I figured it out I am very happy with the purchase. Scott in technical support called me back almost immediately one day last week after I made three separate calls to him, and took all the time needed to answer my rookie questions and explain the system to me. I also hear and read great things about BRS and some of the other RC sponsors, and believe you can't go wrong with of these biggies who specialize in water purity. Just my .02, wouldn't want to miss the opportunity to brag on SpectraPure after having experienced the quality of the product and top-notch customer service.

Does the spectrapure take care of chloramines? Apparently our water contains chloramines.

I've had my spectrapure maxcap since sometime last year. Have made hundreds of gallons of 0TDS water where my city water has 500+ TDS. Extremely happy.

Been using Spectrapure for over 10 years! Great folks, with as much or more water purifying offerings, and excellent customer support than anyone else out there!

I've had GE, Spectrapure and Coralife...the GE was junk, and the Spectrapure was circa 90-ish, was made a lil better and had a built in TDS thingie...
OTOH 3yrs ago I cop'd the Coralife at F&S for like $120...its a 75GPD unit and as far as I'm concerned is just fine...heck its the membrane and cartridges that matter anyway...I'm gonna swap out the next cartridge for a 50GPD I dunno, everyone debates back-n-forth which is best...personally I can't see past a $150 4 stage unit...I usually place a HUGE so called "whole house" filter with a sediment cartridge before it anyway to give my RO cartridges a lil more life (sorta a 4 1/2 "stage" unit).... |
