Can your hammer do this?
Appears to me as though one of the tentacles is hyper inflated. I've heard of this happening but never seen it.

Usually happens when whites go off or all lights are off and your coral is very happy. My hammer just started doing this also.

Thanks JoshuAcOOk and AquariumMan.
Biocubehqi, I use a Canon EOS 50D with Canon 100mm macro lens. The key to accurate colors under high color temperature lighting is to shoot in RAW mode and to set the white balance during post processing. sponger0, thanks for the info. I did feed it the morning before I took this picture. RandysReef, hmm. I see the picture.

Mine usually do that when one of the heads is splitting.

Thanks for the feedback and kind words gentlemen. I am glad to hear that tentacle inflation / bubble blowing by hammers is not a sign of impending doom.

Question - has anyone noticed how to influence the color ratio on bicolor hammers? When I got this hammer over a year ago, it had two branches and only one branch had heads with green tipped tentacles . That has continued to this day where all new heads have followed that pattern.

That's an awesome hammer! I like how some of the tips have streaks of green.

What's the scientific name for this? Is this the same as my frag?

Hammer corals are Euphyllia anchora. They are available in different colors.
The frag in your pic looks like a young hammer to me.

Whats the difference between Euphyllia anchora and Euphyllia parancora. I thought Parancora were "branching" hammers which I thought was mine. Last edited by xmike24; 07/15/2012 at 10:31 AM. |

Thanks day1. I was unaware of the difference in nomenclature.

I was unaware also that the branching ones had a different nomenclature. Need to go to my Flickr account & change the name for my branching hammer LOL.

That "bubble" is normal when the head is splitting. It's not actually a tentacle that is inflated, but more like the "skin" of the coral... It might last for a few days.
That latter picture is parancora, as you guys already said ![]() It is totally different species than ancora. Ancora is the easiest to identify with yeayamaensis IMO. I'm a fan of the Euphyllia corals, and currently I have 6 different species ![]() Ancora, 2 different Parancoras, Paradivisa, Glabrescens and Yeayamaensis. I just cant get enough of these... Here is a video of my yeayamaensis ![]() It really does not show in the video, but it's big! The heads are more than 2" each. I have two of those. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9LOllIbKUI&feature=plcp |

So what is the difference between Paradivisa & Glabrescens?
