Metal in real reef rocks?

I have just drilled in a stone a hole to attach a fragment of a sps.
Is that in real reef rock rust?

Could be some iron; don't really know.

My triton analysis shows a very high copper value of 6.33 and an increased aluminum value.

I don't know how copper or iron could form naturally in old coral skeletons, which is what live rock is made of. I suspect something natural like a colored bacteria staining the old rock internally over many years.

Volcanic rock can certainly have metal, which is one reason to stick to limestone, but limestone shouldn't have it. OTOH, one of my live rocks eventually proved to be a petroleum tar ball. It was nicely coated in marine life.

Good point, but that piece doesn't look volcanic to me. Looks like good ole limestone coral skeletons as the drilled out section is mostly white.

Unfortunately, the manufacturer doesn't say specifically what's what's in it.

It should be against the law to market a man made rock as "Real Reef Rock"

Agreed 100%. That's marketing for you. Do anything to sell the product, even if it's intentionally misleading the customer.
