Sock Filter - Too much noise
Any ideas how to silence a sock filter without losing the functionality of the pre-filter? I would like to use it but it is terribly load and my stand has an open back.
If anyone has a picture of what they did that would help as well. |

What type of pipe or hose is emptying into the sock? Is it below the water level? I run one now and again and it makes no change to the current noise level.
Kc3.

It is a 1.5" flexible overflow line which sits about 2 inches above the sock above the water level. Makes a lot of splashing noises. If I lower it down below the water level but in the sock will it overflow?

I'm not sure I understand. If you lower the hose it overflows?

Your overflow pipe should be below the water level in the sump. That's where your noise is coming from, not the sock. And if your sock is overflowing, it probably needs replaced. You should be swapping your sock out daily. I swap mine sometimes twice a day.

The pipe being below water level does not cause your flow to decrease a noticeable amount. If socks are overflowing, they are clogged. I change mine out 3-5 days. If they are clogging up every day, try a different sock that is a little more open.

I just started using a filter sock.
I have 3 socks and I rotate between them. 1 - in use 1 - ready 1 - rinse/cleaned and drying I also have the water line below the water level and it is quiet.

Colotl, I tried this myself and it works perfectly. No splashing or backing up. Thanks.
My sock is brand new and right now my tank is still in the testing stages. I am working out the quirks. Display tank is totally empty. When I have lifestock I will swap it out frequently. Thanks all. |

I have had this exact same problem and as about to get rid of my sock because of the noise. Now I'll try either bringing up the water level or extend the pipes under the water level and see what that does, thanks!

Extending the pipe down to just below the water lever inside the sock filter worked for me. Silence!
