Question Anyone run their MH retro fits without a tank cover?

LFS run them all like this. About 10" above water.

How do you protect your bulbs?

Thanks

My SE 175's are only 5" off the water with nothing in between. I do not have any problems running like this for years. I even used to have a Foxface that would spit water into the fan that blows directly at the halides. Still no problem then either.

What kinds of problems are you thinking there would be at 10" off the water?

What would they get splashed by at 10" off the water? I am curious because I have had tanks for over 15 years and have never had splashes that I would worry about.

That's why I'm asking. To see if safe to do so. Sites and vendors say to use a sheild, but it seems no one uses them.

Are you talking DE or SE. DE's should have a shield for UV protection for yourself and your animals. SE's use a thicker glass or different element in the glass that does this already. If they are mentioning the splashing it might just be a CYA thing as no company wants to be liable.

I am supprised that no one else is commenting on your question.
