Sump/Pump Question
Hey all. I am upgrading from a 55 G to a standard 90 gallon shortly with the Glass-holes overflow (700 or 1500 GPH?) and will have a 29 G sump with Reef Octopus skimmer rated at 500 GPH. Trying to determine what return pump i will need to match up well with my overflow and skimmer...should i shoot for 500 GPH through the sump? More? Less? Which overflow should i get and why? I have tried these head loss calclulators but nothing is better than good old personal opinions....thanksss

I would shoot for 300-350 GPH. I do about that on my 120 and less on my 75.
GGood return pump would depend on head and pipe size, are you running anything else off the return like carbon or GFO? My new favorites are the Laguna pond pumps, cheap and quiet. The Laguna 1500 is about $110 on the auction site, and has been the quietest internal pump I have used. I use the 900 on my 75 but its a smidge low on flow.

Either overflow will be sufficient, going with the 1500 GPH one may give you more surface area across the tank since it is longer doing a better job skimming the surface water. I have a 90G and use an eheim 1260 and it works out just fine. I actually throttle it back some. If you plan to run reactors off the return, you may want a bigger pump.

I always like to oversize my pump a bit and then choke it down. That way I have extra power to run a manifold. I run an Eheim 1262 on my 60g, and use it to power a BRS reactor, TLF reactor and chaeto refugium.

I like to shoot for either 3x the DT or 10x the sump volume after head loss so in your case about 300gph, be sure to install a ball valve after the pump to fine tune your system.
My fav pumps are the Laguna Max Flo and Sicce |
