I need a chiller
Chiller I bought "new" from some uh, ah, someone on ebay 18 months ago has oil all over the inside, and my tank is at 87*
I put in all the window units today, and my house is cooling down nicely, but from a peak of 88* my tank's only down 1* so far. I know I need a chiller. 3/4 to 1 horse power would be ideal, but I can't afford to be real picky right now. Who's got what for sale?

Just throwing this out there buddy. I have a 1/3rd HP, but it needs a little tlc. HC Transformer wire needs to be resoldered and the unit may or may not need charging. Sold the Ranco controller so I can't tell now. Last time it was in use it was working on my 120Gal. You can have it if you want it. Took it off line once I got the LED's and its been sitting around collecting dust. No oil leaks. Up to you bruh.. LMK.

Maybe I should drop 2K on LEDs instead of 1K on a chiller
![]() I'm not about to do that any time soon, I like the looks of LED lighting, but I'm just not sold, yet. I do really appreciate the offer, and I'm not going to turn it down, it's the best offer I've had so far ![]() ![]()

Hey Larry, yeah I understand totally but you will save in the long run. What is it that you are not sold on them yet? You do get good growth... just corals have to get accustomed to the lighting so that's the only battle I had at 1st. No bulbs to replace yrly, no heat being projected onto the water's surface. No use of a chiller and no draw on electricity or heat being emitted from the chiller and put back into the room raising the temp yet again.. It's just the up front cost, that is what hurts. But worth the investment bruh. My tank temp yesterday was 81.3 and no fans or AC units were turned on or blowing on the waters surface. However today the windowless ac unit went on and it is set for 79* to cut on and off at 75* Tank Temp has been between 79*-80* all day.
As far as the chiller... the last time I checked it was manufactured by copeland and takes the R134-A... yeah I'm done tinkering with things to make them work. Just tired of the DIY stuff I guess. Believe it or not I just got rid of the hose gauge yesterday to screw on the 134-A can to refill. I think autozone should have the kit available and the adapter to fit old R12 valves. As they say " out with the old and in with the new". Whatever you decide LMK bud.. TTY soon!!

I guess that after a dozen years in the hobby, I've seen a lot of things come and go. UG filters, SANO, the Aqua Equalizer, Zeovit, etc. I just don't want to jump into something that may be just a flash in the pan Although LEDs are not brand new anymore, I just don't want to sell off my halides (for pennies on the dollar compared to what I paid) to find out next year that LEDs have some major fault. At that time, halides would be worth a premium again, just in time for me to have to buy them again
![]() I just gotta wait it out a little longer, and that means I need a chiller. For now, 6 window units and a portable A/C in the basement are keeping my house cool (right now, only basement A/C is on, rest of the house is quite comfy) and my tank happy. I'm settling into a part of my life where patching things up with bubblegum and duct tape is getting old, the thought of another used chiller just isn't exciting me. I'm seriously considering this; https://www.tecous.com/chillers/seachill-tr20/ If they charge sales tax, it's probably a deal breaker, but for just under $1,100 I should never have to be concerned with heat again. I feel like that might be worth it. I expected used to run me $500. Teco seems to have good reviews.

There isn't going to be a major fault with LED's. The technology is at a point where it just needs to be tuned to meet our needs, and that is happening quite rapidly
Admittedly, I wouldn't have them yet if my ballasts hadn't blown on my T-5's, but I needed to sink a bunch of money and figured the LED's would prove cheaper within 12 months and I can swap LED's and drivers easily as the tech matures. Since you have 13 years on the forum, I assume you have fans and whatnot already. If I had a successful tank with good lighting, there is a good chance that I would spring for a chiller. |

But VHO and T-5 were both thought to be the be all and end all in aquarium lighting when they hit the market.
My last halide bulb purchase was Geismann bulbs supposed to be good for three years. Even if I only get two, I have more than a year left on them. That's when I'll likely get serious about LED, if they're still as highly regarded as they are now.

Nice design and I like the fact that accessories can be added to the unit prior to shipment for no extra cost(UV). At $125.00 for a UV... that's cheap. I only assume that the UV bulb sold will be matched to the tank size that the purchaser has at home? 130-500 Gallons is a broad range.

Can I make a suggestion?
Go on Craigslist ..... Buy a used $75 chest freezer... hole saw an inlet and an output........ make a coil out of spa flex pvc.... put a valve and a seperate mag pump on the feed....... and during the day when lights are on run that pump .... and at night 2 hours after lights are off shut it off..... The bigger the coil you make the more surface area the water has to run through.... if you place a joint compound bucket with water that will freeze over at night your results will speed up.... Back in the day when I built and modified computers and tested the limits of over clocking ..... This is what I would do...but with copper......Very Very affective.... Total cost should be around 150...... clamps and pump and valve..... and for one 1/10 the cost your in biz......

If space in my "fish room" were not at such a premium, I could see trying that. A minor adjustment here and there like putting the pump on a temp controller and making the coil out of something less insulating than spa flex would up the efficiency. I'm just not sure how to deal with the stagnant water....... I actually have a lead on two or three different used chillers that may work out for me. I decided to drop off my Frankenchiller at a repair shop to see what it would cost to fix it. I am hoping for the best, but I'm a realist and I expect I'll be told to scrap it.

If you haven't found a chiller I have an oceanic inline 1HP chiller for $900.

Hi Anthony,
I haven't seen you around lately, hope all is well. I did wind up going with the Teco Sea Chill unit. Cost was high, but I think I'm happy with it.

Ok no problem. I've been trying to sell it for months now. I have to move 6 hours away in 2 months and I cant find any buyers for my 450 gallon tank stand and canopy, chiller, sump, and LEDS.
