If I want to go Ozone what do you recomend?
Ok my new 180 in wall build
I have been reading about ozone and while thinking about it. Still trying to figure out the PRO's and CON's? For those that have been using it I have seen some bad reviews on certain brands. With that said without breaking the bank but still getting good equipment what would you recommend and what all would I need to one set it up and two set it up safely? Have Apex in place but would need to add ORP module I guess to monitor that unless one of my modules I already have will do that and I only need the probe....guess I need to check that out. I also read some have stopped using it and I wonder why people have stopped using it? |

Since you have a new tank, I would strongly suggest waiting until your tank is well established. You have no idea at this stage whether it's going to benefit you much or not. Given that ozone is controlled based on ORP levels, without knowing what kind of ORP your tank will maintain on it's own once it's established, it's impossible to determine what if any benefit you will see from it. My tank maintains high enough ORP that ozone would be of little to no use. I have it setup on my tank for emergency use at this stage and as such, it's turned off. In your case, if your tank is new, I would strongly suggest waiting several months to become established and stocked to your desired levels before going down the ozone path. That way you can get a real sense of where your ORP levels are at on it's own.
That said, if you were to go that route, knowing your ORP levels and total water volume will help to a minor extent on the generator size. Ozone though a skimmer can be a real challenge as allows excess ozone to escape through the vents on the collection cup as well as through the skimmers effluent. That is nasty stuff that you don't want in the air. It will cause PVC and other plumbing to become brittle and it's also toxic. It can also be toxic to the fish and carbon is the only way to strip it from the air and water. For me I only administer ozone via an Ozone reactor. The ozone reactors effluent gets plumbed via gravity drain through a separate large reactor filled with lignite carbon. The carbon strips the excess ozone from the ozone reactors effluent. I run a good coralvue pressure rated air pump that feeds my Ozotech ozone generator. Some use an air drier ahead of the ozone reactor but I don't. I also run an Apex which serves as my failsafe. I run a separate ozone controller that controls the generator. That ozone controller is powered from one of my EB8's so my Apex can shut the generator down in the event that the ozone controller or it's probe fails.

I agree with slief, I would wait and see.
I run Ozone with an Ozotech Poseidon 200. It's hooked up to my LifeReef skimmer which has the ozone kit, and this particular skimmer recirculates the excess ozone. I do not run an air dryer either. I used to, but it's a pain regenerating and replacing the media all the time. It is supposed to make the unit more efficient and make the cell last longer though. I run the generator on a timer using my Profilux controller. It runs for a few hours in the morning after the lights come on. My ORP probe (controlled via the Profilux) will shut it down if it gets too high. Without ozone, my ORP is around 200-220. With the ozone, it stays in the mid 300's. When I run the ozone, I don't have to clean my glass as often. It definitely does more for me than just running carbon.
