125 build question
Hi guys,
Been a while since I posted on here... I am slowing planning a 125 gallon upgrade from my 75. The tank is 72” long 18 wide and I believe 24 deep. It will also have a 40 breeder sump so total volume will be around 155 gallons (I’m guessing only about 30 gallons of water will be in the sump. Anyways on to my question I’m looking at the Aquamaxx ConeS Q3 skimmer for this build, I’ve had aquamaxx skimmers before and have had great success with them. What I’m wondering, is the Q3 too big for a 125? Rating say 240gal heavily stocked but I’ve read that you should get a skimmer 1.5-2x the volume of your tank. I don’t want to make the mistake of buying a skimmer that’s too big for my tank and not pulling out all the nasty stuff. Thanks in advance Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Probably, I run a CO-2 on my 120 with a 70 gallon sump and it's more than big enough.

Slightly oversized maybe, but double... Yea they are trying to upsell IMO.

I guess the only other question or thought I have is the possibility of an even larger upgrade in 3-4years
Would I be ok using the Q3 on this system and have it for the upgrade later on or would I be better off just getting the right one for this system and upgrade my skimmer at the same time I upgrade size of DT? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Hey guys I know you’ve already given your opinion on this and I appreciate it but I’m still struggling to make a decision between the Q3 and the Q2. I talked to a guy at my lfs and he’s telling that if I plan on feeding heavily, which I do since I’ll have at least 3 tangs (the smaller sized ones like tomini, yellow and bristletooth) a Niger trigger and a couple eels (snowflake and chain link)
He’s suggesting to get the bigger of the two skimmers. If you guys think that’s inaccurate please tell me. This is my first time buying an in sump skimmer and one this large so I’m a bit in unfamiliar territory. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

if you have any plan to upgrade to a larger tank in the future, get the larger skimmer. That being said, you're planned upgrade needs to be within the volume range of the specific skimmer, otherwise you'll need to get a different skimmer in either case.
