heat conduction
does anybody know how much heat in water temp a powerhead will add to a tank. does if have to do with the watts of the power head? how do you know. I am having trouble keeping my temp down and I have a chiller. I am thinking about adding more inlets from the main pump and removing the power heads that are there now.
does anybody know how to figure out how much heat a powerhead gives out. or even how much a pump will give out. Is it with how many watts a pump uses? Thank You Roger |

you could turn one PH off at a time, and see if there is a significant drop in tempature.
what size tank/lighting/canopy are you having problems with? what is the normal room temp? |

thanks but that was not my question. I have pulled the powerheads and the tank is staying with in the range I want 79 degress. I was wondering If anybody know of a study on how much different powerheads raise tank temp? or how to calculate it on my own. by powerhead wattage?
room temp is 74 degrees 24 hours a day. tank is 75 gallon Metal halide lighting which I know is a problem. but the tank will temp even rises over 82 degress at 2 in the morning and no lights have been on for5 yours and the chiller cools the system it just takes to long the chiller is working 6 hours a day with the power heads on. I guess this is still my origanal question I bought 3 new powerheads that I put in a different tank then push 1200gph and only use 8.5watts. I was hoping some one would tell me that the wattage is what raises the water temp, but not if it is not true lol. no canopy on this tank I removed it 6 months ago to help lower temp it helped but still not low enough. as far as turning one powerhead on at a time maybe. thanks Roger

maybe your return pump is creating a lot of heat? that is strange for you to have that much heat with out a canopy, and the room being cool. how far are the lights above the water?

you might see some improvment if you raise your lights up higher, or place a small fan between the lights and the water.

powerheads (or any submersed pump) will add heat equal to the wattage they draw.
All energy used is either converted to A) Heat, or B)Kinetic energy. All Kinetic energy is converted to heat via friction. (water slowing down) So, a 20w powerhead creates 20w of heat, whether its an eheim, or a genx.

well ok if it is created by friction also if I have and 8W power head it will create 8W of heat but lets say it pumps 1200GPH the friction from the water movement hitting the glass and the rocks does that friction create heat to, or just the friction from the parts of the pump rubbing together?
Thanks Roger
