Does my skimmer look alright? (pic inside)

I just setup my Bermuda Aquatics Rogue Wave HOB and the hose going from the pump to the skimmer looks like **** in my tank. Anyways, is the water level high enough in my skimmer? I just turned it on about an hour ago. Is there any way to hide my tubing?

Here is the pic...

Pic of the bulky tube...

Pic of the first inhabitants....

Whole shot of the tank....

I would lower the water level in the skimmer body some until the skimmer breaks in and than you can fine adjust it for wet/dry skimming.

Haywood, imo this does NOT look ok to me. I'm pretty sure you need two plastic hose clamp's and you clamp on on the spot where the hose meets the skimmer fitting and anothe ron where the hose meets the pump fitting. You want these two as close as possible. The tube shouldn't be more than a few inches IMO, just enough to connect the two. I'll hunt for a pic for ya.

Here's a poor example since its a joke of a skimmer but look at the tube coming off the remora pro and how short it is, then look at how the pump's attached to the urchin. You want the short hose attached like that. Make sense. LMK if you need help. Here's the link.

The only problem is that the tube from the skimmer points downwards, and the tube from the pump points outwards.... so if I mounted the pump on the back of the tank, it would be sticking atleast 6" out, and the tubing would almost have to come backwards and then up... I think I am going to unplug it for now. What do you think I should do??

Here's your options. The remora doesn't suction the pump to the back, it hangs freely. I think this would be the same case here. But if you wanted to suction the pump to the back of the tank you would need to get a 3/4" make threaded fitting, a bit of 3/4" pvc and an elbo and then a hose adapter. Make sense. I'm just guessing the output of the pump is 3/4".

So you're saying either let the pump hang "freely" or modify it? The hose is 3/4" ID.

Exactly. Most let it hang freely and use clamps to secure it. This would be your easiest and best performing bet.

There's some plastic hose clamp's for cheap. And you would put one on the skimmer hose adapter and one on teh pump hose adapter. They would secure the two together so they don't fall off. They work well.

-shorten the tube
-clamp the pumps, you dont want a water fountain
-super glue some suction cup brackets (mj1200) to the side so the pumps output can face straight up.

hopefully that will fix the bubble production too...yes skimmers need time to break in.... the oils make the foam collapse, not prevent it from injecting air.

You could try home depot or lowes but i've never had luck with plastic hose adapters from there but ask someone in the plumbing dept, ya never know, or call. And it could take you a week or two to get that skimmer dialed in right. My skimmers have always taken around 2weeks to get going and another month to get just how i like them. I'm guessing that one will take 3-5 days tops imo to start skimming.

some plastic zip ties will make a good temp hose clamp.

When you say dialed in, how exactly do you know when its dialed in and where should I want all of the water in the skimmer?

I just mean when you find the spot you like to keep the water line and the spot that produces the thickness of skimmate you like. I would think that you would want to keep the water line at the bottom of the riser tube in the beginning and after 3-5days you can move it up a bit if you want. It usually takes a bit to get it how you prefer it.

Go to your LFS (local Fish Store) they will have the clams and they are about .30 to .50 cents a piece. Don't waste time and money on having them shipped to you. Your LFS will have them in bulk.

P.S. consider getting a sump you can hide all your filters in the sump and none of the hoses will be visiable in the display.
