Debris floating in water
I seem to have alot of little things floating in my water (I think from the live rock and the hermit picking things off it) what can I do to get rid of it?
I asked the LFS and he told me just wait and it will clear but it has not! Is my skimmer not good enough? Should I take my bio balls out and put LR rubble in? Thanks B |

Usually the skimmer picks some up, and some of it settles. If you are using a filter pad or sponges or other particulate filter media, that will pick some of it up as well.
Most reefers dont use bio balls. Sumps are often just used as a place for your overflow to dump water and to connect your pumps, media reactors, skimmers etc. Some use live rock in the sump and others just use it as I described. You can remove the bio balls and allow the live rock and any substrate you have in the tank to take care of the biological filtration. You dont need and of it in the sump. You can use that Bio ball area to set up a 100 micron filter sock for the overflow to drain into. That will pick up virtually all the particles that float in the water and make it to the overflow. Also virtually eliminates microbubbles from any water that flows through it. |
