Absolute Quietest Pump
I am helping my parents set up a 210 and have a Gen X PCX30 as the return and tonight my Mom said, "I dont care what it costs but get me the quietest pump they make."
So what do you think is the quietest external return pump, Red Dragon??? |

Sequence is quiet.
However, I have been researching this as well and if she really means "I dont care what it costs but get me the quietest pump they make." Then Red Dragon.

I am also trying to figure out the quietest pump.
Sequence is the same as Reeflo, right? these are 52 dB according to their specs. I have read that the Poseidon pumps are only 32dB. How quiet are the red dragon pumps ? |

Well, according to some of the reefers that own them, the Red Dragon pumps ACTUALLY ABSORB noise around them, thus making your whole world quieter.

The water cooled externals like the Poseidon are supposed to be extremely quiet. The trade off is they will add heat to the tank.

I have the velocity version of the poseidon pumps. They are totally silnet but like others state they do add heat. However for a 200+G tank that is minimal & isn't enough to worry about.
The sequence pumps are very quiet but not as quiet as these. Then again the poseidon/velocity pumps flow about 1/2 or 1/3 of what the sequence pumps do. I had a GenX external pump one time.... never again... talk about loud I just had a Velocity T4 freeze up on my after 12+yrs of use (It's run dry a few time) & I replaced it with a pump that champion stated was quiet. It's a BlueLine 40 something.... which can be heard 20+ft away. Thus I just purchased a used velocity T4 so it will be quiet again...... excellent pumps

I run a sequence Wahoo and you can barely tell its running. My durso's are way louder than the pump.

I have a Red Dragon, Eheim and Poseidon pumps. They're all very quiet but especially the Poseidon and Red Dragon. The latter 2 you can not hear run at all.
The Poseidon which also sells as a Blueline Velocity I believe, does add some heat to the water and is very warm to the touch. But an extremely quiet and good reliable pump. It is also capable of handeling high head pressures. The Red Dragon has some very nice features and very low power consumption. |

As for heat, maybe I keep my place too cold in the winter, but I know that my heater was on overnights all the time ( when the lights are off ), never had noticed any heat issues from mine.

Red Dragons are excellent flow pumps, but their head pressure handling isnt the best. I dont know that I would suggest one for a return pump exactly. OTOH, the Laguna makes a pressure biased 'Max-Flo Power pump', PT-360, which uses the same Laguna motorblock as the Red Dragons, and includes a float-switch shut-off should it run out of water, and it is saltwater safe. You can pick it up for rather cheap as well. If there was a Red Dragon pump based on this motorblock, then I would be saying Red Dragon as well... but as it is, this is the best motorblock for a return pump.

I decided that a RD wouldnt be worth it b/c it would just be drowned out by the skimmer, so i went with an eheim
