I've use the following heaters with a temperature controller for additional safety:
- Fluval Tronic (http://www.amazon.com/Fluval-Tronic-.../dp/B0009YF48K) - Eheim Jager (http://www.amazon.com/Ebo-Jager-Aqua...0661326&sr=1-3) Use about 2 watts per gallon. Two 200-watt heaters will work fine. If one fails (stuck on or stuck off), the other heater will provide a backup. Two 200-watt heaters on a temperature controller would be perfect. The Fulval Tronic heater is well designed with rubber protectors on both ends and can rest easily on the bottom of a sump. The Eheim Jager heater is my favorite since it can be calibrated should it drift. If you do not have temperature controller, I would use two Jager heaters and calibrate them periodically. |

I would second the Ebo Jager heaters. Very good quality and reliable. (Also fully submersible). Definately get two smaller as apposed to one larger. Some people would actually reccomend 3-5 watts per gallon. What ever you do just make sure you get two and if its a reef a temp controller is a wise investment.
The Rancho Temp Controllers a pretty popular. They come in Single Stage for just heaters and Dual Stage for heaters and Chiller/Fans. IMO by the time you spend the $100 plus on the Temp controller you might want to just look at a Reefkeeper 2 or some other controler that will handle the rest of your controlling needs.
