Can I use DampRid to raise Calcium?

Here is the link to the MSDS. It is a Moisture Absorber that has high anhydrous calcium chloride, but I dont know about chemistry and dont know if the other ingredients are bad.

Downhillbiker, IME i have used turbo calcium by kent, it works great, just follow instructions, its a little bit pricey but worth it, if you want to use Damprid then i suggest asking in the chemistry forum they might now more about that chemical....

Thanks for the response. I did ask in the chemistry forum also, but so many more people are in these forums, I decided to ask in both locations.

I just can't keep using "reef calcium" supplements. there are so many more out there that are much cheaper, and i have high demands, so will save hundreds over the years. many people use dowflake, but that is not available here on west coast, and Damprid is the new replacement for Dry-z-Air

I know, it takes forever for questions to get answered over there. I think the word chemistry scares people away. Maybe they can change the name of that forum to something like "adjusting water quality"

Here is an article about a DIY calcium alkalinity supplement. Bulk reef supply (one of our sponsors) carries large quantities of this recipe at pretty reasonable prices.

Use Kalkwasser and you kill two birds with one stone (Calcium and Alkalinity). You can get Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime at the grocery store for a couple bucks.

i use kalk, but i have too high of demand to use kalk alone. you can only dose so much before it raises pH too much, and adding vinegar to counter the high pH also doses carbon, so bacterial bloom.

but actually i gave up on the DampRid, and am going with kalk, but not regular kalk, i will add muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid) to it and make it have higher calcium, and lower alk.

i will still dose kalk for top off, but use this to adjust ca, and baking soda to adjust alk, as the 2-part.

DampRid is fine. I used to use it in my tank because I already had a bunch of it, but if you go to a pool supply store you can get cheaper calcium chloride of the same or better purity.

not to second guess you seapug..cause your just awesome u know...

but i thought a kalkwater solution was to maintain cal/alk levels...???

also get some kent calcium in a bottle to raise it.... then maintain it with the Mrs. wages...atleast what i read

my two cents DOWNHILLBIKER... if your CA demand is so high, and you're looking to "save hundreds over the years" you're obviously looking into this hobby long term, so my advice is a Ca Reactor is the way to go. a large initial investment, but will pay for itself in suppliements down the road.

You only have a 72 bowfront, how can you not keep up with your calcium demands with Kalkwasser?

Are you dosing any 2 part?

I would go calcuim reactor, or dose 2 part.

I have a friend with a 1000 gallon SPS tank, he doesnt have a calc reactor, but uses 2 part & kalkwasser to keep up with the hundreds of SPS he has in the tank.

400 ML of 2 part + 1 gallon of kalkwasser a day.

Reefing is not for the faint of wallet and cutting corners usually leads to disaster.

I also think a ca reactor is a wise choice in your case.

P.S. Good to see her back gb.
