Your sediment and carbon filters should be changed about every 6 months. Your Di cartridge is likely exhausted and should be changed now.
Your membrane should last for years. I would immediately change your sediment, carbon and di filters. ![]() |

A TDS reading of 3 likely isn't the cause of an algae outbreak. I'd look at other factors such as amount and frequency of feedings, nutrient export, etc... Regarding the TDS of 3, I second the advice that you need to change your sediment and carbon block filters every six months or so. Your membrane life is heavily dependent on those two items performing at peak efficiency. It's also a good idea to disinfect your RO/Di system every time you change filters, or at least every couple times. To do this, just pull out the membrane (keep it moist while it's out of the housing) and remove the carbon block and sediment filter (you're changing them after disinfecting anyway...). Pour a little bit of bleach into the first stage canister and then screw it back on, along with the carbon block canister. Unhook the DI from the output of the membrane, and run water through the unit to kill any bacteria. Keep the water running for 15 minutes or so to make 100% sure you've got all the bleach out of the system. Then just put the membrane back in, replace your carbon/sediment filters and hook the DI back in-line and you're good to go.
Of course, since your TDS is 3, you'll want to replace your DI resin. Disinfecting isn't absolutely necessary unless you think the unit might need it, but you definitely need to replace your DI and carbon/sediment filters to get your unit back to tip top shape. -Joe |
