I would use distilled water if I were to use a jug.

If they have a culligans water machine there you can use that too. that's what I use. you can buy the five gallon plastic cans there too. it cost less than four bucks to fill two of them.

I used distilled (from anywhere) before I got a R.O. unit but running out or buying the whole isle of water gets old real fast between top off water and water changes.

I've used grocery store distilled water with good results, but just bought an RO/DI Unit. Cheaper in the long term, and no more reasons to use tap water when too lazy to run to the store!

To be honest, I thought the same thing. I bought water (distilled) before i got my unit. Wal_Mart is right across the street from me, but it took less time to hook up my RODI unit after it arived at my house, than it would have taken me to go across the street to walmart...lol The whole thing is already hooked together. Red line to water supply, connection included, black line in drain, and blue line to mixing tank... I am serious, it didnt take me 10 minits to get it up and running... RODI unit is going to be cheaper in the long run...
But... Distilled is probably better than RO (as long as you know it wasnt distilled with copper!), but a RODI unit would probably be better than distilled. Walmart sells RO water, not RODI, so it probably is not much better than the windmill water you wrote of.. IMHO
